Here are some future cherry blossoms. In the background is the Arlington House as seen through my telephoto lens from JFK’s grave. This 19th-century mansion was originally built in 1802 and at that point there was no national cemetery (the cemetery came in 1864 after the land was confiscated by the government during the civil war).
The house was originally owned by George Washington Parke Custis, who was the adopted grandson of George Washington. Later, Custis’ only child, Mary Anna, married her childhood sweetheart, Robert E. Lee and the two of them lived in the house until 1861. It is thought that Lee wrote his now famous resignation letter (from the US Army) on the second floor.
