Opposite the Dutch Church is the Old Dutch Government House. This house was built in 1683 is a good example of an old colonial building. On the door is a rooster standing on a rock, or the Cock of Galle that is also seen on the Old Fort Entrance. The whole cock thing is a play on words: the word Gala / Galle in Sinhalese means Cock.
Inside the original Dutch ovens exist, but are not used because this building is currently used as a commercial office. Rumour has it that the building is to be converted into a luxury hotel.
It is common knowledge amongst locals and travellers that the house is haunted by the ghost of a young woman was killed after being betrayed by her Dutch lover.
