The photo below was taken in Sardinia during the 1950s. The tiny little donkey pulling the cart is a special breed of donkey native to the islands of Sicily and Sardinia (originally thought to come from Egypt).
The more I read about these little donkeys the more I realize what a marvellous creature they are. The man accredited for importing the Sardinian donkey to the US (Robert Green) was once quoted saying, “Miniature Donkeys possess the affectionate nature of a Newfoundland, the resignation of a cow, the durability of a mule, the courage of a tiger, and the intellectual capability only slightly inferior to man’s.” [Source][link removed]. Stories of the donkey’s strong, loyal temperament are peppered throughout literature, most notably throughout Christian literature.
The little Sardinian breed pictured above is now facing extinction. It’s said that there are only 150 left in Sardinia.
