Below are a couple of scenes from Lelling and Lixing-lès-Saint-Avold in France; both are small towns located near Grostenquin — one of four RCAF air force bases established in Europe during the Cold War. The four were formed as part of Canada’s air defense commitment to NATO — though their existence was rather short lived. Grostenquin itself opened in 1952 and closed twelve years later after a dispute with France over nuclear weapons.
My mom (who lived in Grostenquin) will enjoy this website [link no longer available] (one of the many school photos may contain her smiling face). As well, she’ll be interested to know that this summer in Cornwallis, NS there is a 2(F) Wing RCAF Grostenquin Family Reunion (August 28 – 30, 2009).
