There was quite a bit of hemming and hawing over whether or not this would be one of La Niña’s planned activities. On one hand, it looked fun, had dogs, horses, and acrobats. On the other hand, there were clowns and no one hates clowns more than my child.
She eventually decided that she would put up with the clowns in order to see the horses and dogs because the horses and dogs looked “oh so cute” on the circus website.
In the end, a mistrust of clowns was never really an issue. The clowns at Big Apple are more comedians/magicians than the stereotypical red nose, face painted, silly creatures we have come to know. Our clown, the tourist, had La Niña laughing like crazy with his antics and when he decided, at one point in the show, to climb over our heads, it elicited so much laughter that I thought she was going to fall over.
A big hit is always the animals. In this case: nine dogs, eight horses, one rat, and a chubby South American capybara named Bob. From her perspective, the best part of the show was when the dogs rode on the back of a pony during a pony taxi act. La Niña still remembers every detail of this part of the show right down to the colour of the saddles and the order in which each dog rode on the pony.
Experience aside, the Big Apple is extra golden because it has its fingers in many different pies. Not only do they perform, but they also teach, compete, and are active in bringing laughter to sick kids and vaudeville to nursing care facilities.
