We were a part of a mob of people who descended upon our community centre this evening after hearing a rumour that the community association was voting to get rid of one of our largest dog parks.
It’s true that our community doesn’t have the voter mass that many larger communities like Dalhousie and Tuscany have, but that’s because one third of the community is made up of undeveloped park land; and tonight, dog owners who chose this community for the off leash areas (like us) were more than prepared to fight tooth and nail for that land.
Clearly it’s a contentious issue and as the mob descended upon our community hall the community association locked the doors and shut the blinds.
They sent out a little wisp of a woman who looked like she belonged in a library with her oversized glasses and stooped manner. She politely told us that the dog park was not on the agenda and that a few citizens tried to bypass the community by bringing a petition to the city. However, the city is still stinging from their $85,000 mistake and the mere handful of signatures on the petition barely raised an eyebrow.
We all chatted for a while about the $85,000 mistake, funny dog stories and community lore. Tonight there would be no burning poop in bags or sit-ins with angry / cranky citizens who covet their green space. As we all headed home we wondered who started the rumour and if they were sitting at home giggling at the crazy dog owners.
