On March 29, 2003, I went on a tour of artist homes and studios in Calgary. Sponsored by the Triangle Gallery, it gave me the opportunity to see inside many abodes that I have often admired from the sidewalk. This home is the fourth home of eight in this series.
I have heard it said that Calgarians are afraid of light and they are afraid of colour, especially when it comes to building and decorating their homes. This team of artists are afraid of neither. Their house is bright, colourful, cheerful and definitely unique. I remember thinking as I walked through the front doors that walking into their house at times was like walking into an Esher painting; it was a complete breath of fresh air.
Everyone knows this house, it is in Edworthy Park and stands out like a flame on the otherwise colourless prairie landscape. I have often wondered what the house looks like inside and while I was touring the home learned that there are many in Calgary who have wondered the same thing. This house had drawing power for the tour and most people asked if it was on the agenda when they booked their tickets.
Believe it or not, this house is a renovated bungalow. The couple added two studio spaces on the second floor, both of which have a wonderful view of the bike paths and the bow river; it uses geometry and bright colour to its benefit. You can tell the artists spend most of their time in the studios on the top floor. The main floor is neat and uncluttered while the work area had loads of busy people character.
