The Empire State Building

Who hasn’t heard of the Empire State Building? It was built in 1931, King Kong climbed it in 1933, the Stay Puft Marshmallow man covered it in 1984, and the Muppets visited it that same year. The building has appeared in over 90 movies and was once known as the world’s tallest building until it was topped by the World Trade Center in 1970.

Ironically, the Empire State Building is another NY building that has had a plane crash into it. On a foggy day in July 1945 a B-25 bomber crashed into the north side of the 79th floor killing the entire crew and 11 civilians in the building. According to About.com and The Empire State Building Book the last transmission between the LaGuardia control tower and the pilot was: “From where I’m sitting, I can’t see the top of the Empire State Building.”
