Dinant, Belgium

Ah Dinant, and it’s two dominant buildings: the Citadel sitting atop a 100 meter high cliff, and the Gothic style Notre Dame Cathedral with its shiny metal dome. The Citadel, with its checkered history, was originally built in the 11th century and was destroyed / rebuilt / destroyed / rebuilt with a fervour only befitting an extremely strategic location. Rumour has it that Charles de Gaulle himself was wounded in Dinant during one of these fervent attacks during the Great War.

And below, a view from atop the Citadel down to the Meuse River as it flows from France, to the Netherlands, and eventually the North Sea. Incidentally, the Meuse marked one border of the Holy Roman Empire during the 9th century.
