Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden

Step into our door and out of your daily life. As your heart and mind relax, energy renews. Journey back in time to 15th Century China and enjoy this “window to another world.”

Located on Carroll Street between Keefer and East Pender, this garden is a replica of what you would expect to find in China during the Ming dynasty; and, upon completion in 1986, it was the first full-size Chinese scholar garden built outside of China. The entire endeavour took 10-years of work and planning to bring it to Vancouver.

There are two parts to the garden, the public gardens (free of charge) and the paid Garden of Ease; both are joined by a common pond. All materials used in the construction of the Garden of Ease were brought over from China and planted by artisans from Suzhou. With admission, you are given a tour that explains how the garden was built, the materials used, and the significance of the different placements and patterns.

When it opened in 1986, a standard admission to the Scholars Garden was $3 for an adult… $1.50 for kids, students and seniors. These days the cost is between $9-$12. Special events like the Judge Dee Murder Mystery and the Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival are the same price as an admission or by donation.
