Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

Our journey to San Luis Obispo in July was for the sole purpose of completing the NorCal Mission Quest. Mission San luis Obispo is the last on the list of Missions to visit in Northern California and we wanted to go out with a bang. The journey included the Madonna Inn, Mission San Miguel, Mission San Antonio, Mission Soledad, and Mission La Purisima.

The Mission I didn’t write about was Mission San Luis Obispo.

San Luis Obispo is #5 on the Mission list (1772) and is located in the heart of the SLO shopping district. It’s a vibrant and active mission with free parking and access to the site.

Somewhere along the way, we purchased a Ghosts of the California Missions book for reading while on the drives between each of the Missions. San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is apparently known for ghostly music that plays around the alter. Also, Niña’s favourite story takes place in the confessionals where a man claimed he heard ghostly Spanish voices. When asked what the voices were saying he replied, I don’t know. I don’t speak Spanish.

We encountered nothing ghostly, but there were plenty of devoted practitioners who stopped in for a fevered lunchtime prayer. Also, the wall murals are worth a peruse in the main chapel.
