Artist Homes: 14th Avenue

On March 29, 2003, I went on a tour of artist homes and studios in Calgary. Sponsored by the Triangle Gallery, it gave me the opportunity to see inside many abodes that I have often admired from the sidewalk. This home is the sixth home of eight in this series.

This home belongs to a ceramic artist couple who were more than willing to share their romantic and artfully decorated 14th Avenue bungalow. There are many different design styles present in their residence, but a lot of thought has been put into their blending and rather than looking patchwork-ish, everything works together in harmony. That is how I felt while in their home: harmonious.

You can see the love of Asian art in the work that he creates and also in the choices he and his wife have made in decorating their home. There is virtually no clutter which makes me envious because clutter rules my life and I hate it. Even the backyard studio has order and is free of clutter.

To get to the studio you have to pass by a secret garden, which is not so secret, and I’m sure it is very beautiful in the summer when everything is alive and colourful. The couple has a very open relationship with their neighbours and has built a pathway leading to the house next door. I noticed that people were walking in and out of that house as well even though it wasn’t part of the tour.
