In New York City, on the corner of 7th Ave and 11th St, you can hear the tiles tinkling in the wind as you approach, whispering the names of those who died on 9\/11. This is one of the many memorials that appeared on the streets of New York after 9\/11 — the story is below from one of the tiles on the fence:<\/p>\n

How Did This Memorial <\/a>Begin?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like many of you — all wanted to do in the days that followed 9\/11 was to dig! But since our hands could not do that — they did what they do best — work in clay. On 9\/13, OUR NAME IS MUD<\/a> filled this fence with angels and flags as missives of good will for the victims of 9\/11. Sadly, almost all of the original artwork was stolen in the weeks that followed its installation. But other ceramic studios across the USA soon sent tiles and this memorial grew to what you see today.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It feels right that people would take the tiles in the days following 9\/11; like support and thoughts were given — and people took what they needed to heal. <\/p>\n
