{"id":15761,"date":"2011-03-29T08:29:16","date_gmt":"2011-03-29T14:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wend.ca\/?p=15761"},"modified":"2021-12-29T21:55:09","modified_gmt":"2021-12-30T02:55:09","slug":"los-bichos-de-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wend.ca\/?p=15761","title":{"rendered":"Los Bichos de Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unlike in the Dominican, where staff <a href=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/?p=1942\">walked around in white suits and gas masks<\/a> in an attempt to eradicate any little creature that had the audacity to show its ugly face in the resort, Cuba was more welcoming of creatures. We encountered many <em>bichos<\/em> daily and it became a learning opportunity for <em>La Ni\u00f1a<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Our favourite encounters were with the lizards. Here is an <em>Anolis sagrei<\/em> (brown Anole) who popped out of a bush to say hello.<\/p>\n<p>We found a close cousin sunning on a rock by the pool. We think it is a Cuban Curly-tailed Lizard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000806.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000806.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"450\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-67544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000806.jpg 706w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000806-595x379.jpg 595w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000806-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the first amphibian encounters. I believe this is a cane toad &#8212; the species imported to Australia in hopes it would eat cane beetles and solve the country&#8217;s beetle problem. Instead, the two species ignore each other and the cane toad is now eating its way across Australia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000897.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000897.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"450\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-67545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000897.jpg 697w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000897-595x384.jpg 595w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000897-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure what this is&#8230; perhaps some sort of sand or tiger beetle. We found it on the beach. You&#8217;d think that the red and blue would make it easy to identify.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000242.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"450\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-67541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000242.jpg 696w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000242-595x385.jpg 595w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/sm-p1000242-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>La Ni\u00f1a&#8217;s<\/em> first snake sighting. I&#8217;m not sure what kind of snake this is.
