{"id":32021,"date":"2011-09-01T06:54:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-01T12:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wend.ca\/?p=32021"},"modified":"2020-04-21T20:29:42","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T00:29:42","slug":"bichos-do-brasil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wend.ca\/?p=32021","title":{"rendered":"Bichos do Brasil &#8212; The Tiny Beasts of Brasil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not quite translated into &#8220;the tiny beasts&#8221; like it would be in Spanish, in Portuguese bichos refers to animals in a more general sense. <\/p>\n<p>One thing that surprised me was the absence of bugs in both Sao Paulo and Fortaleza &#8212; when not looking for creatures, I believe I saw one cockroach by a sewage opening while getting into a cab in Fortaleza. And&#8230; a crab that decided to stalk my foot on the beach at Canoa Quebrada. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1070893.jpg\" alt=\"sm-P1070893\" width=\"600\" height=\"429\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1070893.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1070893-595x425.jpg 595w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1070893-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beyond these two, to find tiny beasts, I spent an hour wandering around a wooded area in Icarai, a small town between Fortaleza and Cumbuco Beach (after the bus I was riding on broke down on the way to Cumbuco). I discovered that when you start looking at things in a micro view you find interesting life.<\/p>\n<p>The pretty little <em>Tetrio Caterpillar<\/em> below will eventually become a <em>Sphinx moth<\/em> (remember the <a href=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/?p=15761\">sphinx moth from Cuba<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/med-P1080048.jpg\" alt=\"med-P1080048\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/med-P1080048.jpg 800w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/med-P1080048-595x396.jpg 595w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/med-P1080048-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The below butterfly look much bigger in the photo than it is in real life. It&#8217;s the same size as my fingernail. I&#8217;m not sure what exactly it is &#8212; but it came in a brown model as well. It could be an <em>Asterope<\/em> or the recently cataloged <em>Thepytus Carmen<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080043.jpg\" alt=\"sm-P1080043\" width=\"600\" height=\"410\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080043.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080043-595x407.jpg 595w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080043-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were lots of <em>Monarch butterflies<\/em> flitting about, but they were very skittish. This was the only one I managed to snap.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080085.jpg\" alt=\"sm-P1080085\" width=\"600\" height=\"403\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080085.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080085-595x400.jpg 595w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080085-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Brazil is known for its large variety of arachnids&#8230; with <em>large<\/em> being the keyword. I only seemed to be able to find these tiny little white jumping spiders that had odd moving heads.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080089.jpg\" alt=\"sm-P1080089\" width=\"600\" height=\"406\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080089.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080089-595x403.jpg 595w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080089-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is some kind of red beach wasp that followed me everywhere in Cumbuco. The locals seemed to be really afraid of them so I assumed they were a wasp (perhaps incorrectly). These bugs seemed to like to commit suicide by diving into the ocean.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080245.jpg\" alt=\"sm-P1080245\" width=\"600\" height=\"402\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73773\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080245.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080245-595x399.jpg 595w, https:\/\/wend.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sm-P1080245-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, a wall of geckos magically appeared for me on my last day in Fortaleza.
