{"id":3925,"date":"2009-02-09T21:17:54","date_gmt":"2009-02-10T04:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wend.ca\/?p=3925"},"modified":"2024-01-07T10:57:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-07T15:57:24","slug":"natzweiler-struthof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wend.ca\/?p=3925","title":{"rendered":"Natzweiler-Struthof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While looking for photos from Vimy Ridge in honour of the Grand-P\u00e8re of Vimy, I found some old photos made from colour slides that my Papa took in Europe during the early to mid-1950s.<\/p>\n<p>The photo on the left is of the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190513133435\/http:\/\/www.scrapbookpages.com\/Natzweiler\/Tour\/Crematorium.html\">Natzweiler-Struthof Crematorium<\/a>, part of the only concentration camp established by the Nazis in France (the novelist Boris Pahor was a prisoner in Natzweiler-Struthof).<\/p>\n<p>What struck me most about this photo is the clothing worn by the people walking towards the site. It&#8217;s so similar to the clothing worn by people in the 1940s, that I realized that this photo couldn&#8217;t have been taken more than a decade and a half after the crematorium was liberated in November 1944.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never been to any concentration campsites, but even in looking at these photos I feel incredibly sick&#8230; especially seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190319015457\/http:\/\/www.scrapbookpages.com:80\/Natzweiler\/Tour\/Gallows.html\">the gallows<\/a> (the 1950s) with the Vosges Mountains in the
