{"id":41004,"date":"2012-04-16T05:23:27","date_gmt":"2012-04-16T11:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wend.ca\/?p=41004"},"modified":"2020-06-20T20:33:45","modified_gmt":"2020-06-21T00:33:45","slug":"vancouver-skytrain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wend.ca\/?p=41004","title":{"rendered":"Vancouver Skytrain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I was a young girl, way way back in 1986, my family visited Vancouver during <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Expo_86\">Expo &#8217;86<\/a>. It was for this exhibition that the idea for the Skytrain was formed and implemented. And, I have to say, since that time the Skytrain has become the best transit system that I&#8217;ve experienced in Canada. <\/p>\n<p>While Calgary&#8217;s transit system is 10-years behind that of other major cities, Vancouver&#8217;s Skytrain has many of the features you&#8217;d expect to see in a city transit line: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you can use a swipe pass (employer passes and upass for students)<\/li>\n<li>pre-paid smartcards will be available to everyone by 2013<\/li>\n<li>it&#8217;s zoned with discounts during non-peak times<\/li>\n<li>you can pay for tickets using a credit or debit card<\/li>\n<li>the train runs to the airport<\/li>\n<li>their above platform timing system is accurate<\/li>\n<li>wait times for trains are short because trains run frequently<\/li>\n<li>there are rapid transit lines from distant communities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The coolest thing about the Skytrain: it&#8217;s driver-less; and, financially, the Skytrain generates a profit from it&#8217;s operations [link removed]. <\/p>\n<p>On the tourist front, the Skytrain draws tourists to Vancouver every year&#8230; it&#8217;s cheap, easy to use, and listed on many websites as one of the things to
