Take one spirited toddler who likes to climb everything, mix her with two parents who are missing chunks of hair (from pulling it out), and an engineer who is a great big kid (Kevin the Neighbour)… and you have the creation of a toddler climbing wall.<\/p>\n

The wood is seven layer (applewood and birch hybrid) plywood (8ft by 4ft – 3\/4 inch). The edges are beveled and sanded to keep our little toddler from getting splinters in her hands when she grabs them.<\/p>\n

The back has three hinged supports — one on either end and one in the middle. They are hinged so we can change the pitch or move the wall around the house if needed. The bottoms are chained for extra stability (not seen in the picture).<\/p>\n

The hand holds are the Metolius Kids 35 Hold Mega Pack that you can find at MEC (note: we only paid half the listed price – they do go on sale from time to time). These are designed for kid hands. To add the holds you will need a drill and a 1\/2 inch drill bit to bore the holes, a hammer to pound in the nuts and a bit of patience as you add the holds (La Ni\u00f1a<\/em> and I did the work — she chose the hold and its subsequent position). The kit comes with a tool for attaching the hand holds and a drill will also be needed for adding a second screw (the holds are anti-spin).<\/p>\n

Climbing apparel are simple $2 swimming deck shoes from Walmart, shorts and a t-shirt.<\/p>\n
