Jeff came into town for the weekend and while we were in Annapolis Royal whale watching we decided to take in the sights at the Habitation and Fort Anne.<\/p>\n

The Habitation or Port Royal as it is called by Parks Canada is one of the oldest buildings in North America. The location itself dates back to 1604 and was fought over for centuries by the English and French. This is also the last area that many Acadians saw before they were deported to the US. But, many also stayed which is evident in the number of French names you see in Annapolis.<\/p>\n

I love to come to the fort because it is a place filled with so much history. Though, now that I am pregnant my hormonal perspective of everything is skewed. I kept thinking about how creepy the rooms were and how much they smelled of death and disease. I wonder how many children lived in the dark fort rooms, cooped up during harsh winters; and, I keep thinking about all those poor mothers in England and France who had children fighting in a foreign country.<\/p>\n

Fort Anne was no better though the actual museum was shut down because of the Parks strike. The town itself hurting too badly for lack of tourists; the whale has brought hordes of people from both out of town and from all over the province.<\/p>\n
