Next to the Qcentre (to the south) is one of the St. Charles Township Cemeteries — the North Cemetery. It is sandwiched between the Norris Woods Nature Preserve and an older graveyard: the Union Cemetery.
As we stumbled upon this peaceful little area it was exactly what we needed. The day was uber hot and we were in bad need of a break. The cemetery has large shading trees and plenty of quiet.
There was the element of surprise from the other wanderers when we discovered a grouping of civil war (union) graves; none of us realized the sheer number of Union soldiers that came from Illinois. The most famous of all is John Franklin Farnsworth, who was a Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General and US politician.
