Potatoes or salmon on a stick, Ukrainian handicrafts, beer steins, cupcakes, fudge and maple candies, ornaments, handmade toys, snow globes and knitted goods, a cup or two of mulled wine… the Christmas market in Vancouver continues a centuries-old German tradition of bringing warmth and laughter to the darkest season.
This is the third year that the German Market has blessed the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza. On the night I attended, it was chilly but dry, and the market was not so busy that you couldn’t move around. I’m told that on the weekends that Vancouverites flock to the city’s only outdoor market like bees to honey. It’s a lovely place to get into the Christmas mood.
Beyond the handicrafts, unique food, and mulled wine, in the centre of the market is Vancouver’s only Christmas Carousel.
