The last grouping of photos is of Chinatown and area around the Centre Street Bridge. As it happens, I had a Friday appointment close to the top of the bridge and got a glimpse of the flooding.
One of the photos (water close-up) is from the lower deck under the bridge on Thursday before the evacuations began (courtesy dP). This is when the lower deck was still above water and people could drive on it. If you look at the bridge in the other photos you can no longer see the road. It’s completely submerged.
What’s shocking is people are still going around the safe zone (manned by police), hopping fences, and crossing gigantic puddles to get a better view of the river. But it’s very dangerous because the river is moving at an astonishing speed.
My thoughts are with you all in Calgary and hope the worst is over. I take solace in the fact that you westerners are a resilient bunch.
