Kirkland, Washington

How many Costco shoppers are there out there? Well… how many of you have purchased something from the Kirkland Signature brand? The Kirkland Signature name comes from Kirkland the city in the photos below; this used to be the location of Costco’s main branch (before it moved in 1996).

There was little opportunity for us to explore this cute little city on the edge of Lake Washington — known for its parks and restaurants. We came here to eat at Anthony’s, which came highly recommended but in actuality was an *ok* restaurant (nothing to write home about). That said, the view of the boats and surrounding lake make the trip worthwhile.

A little bit of Kirkland’s ship-building history from their website:

“Kirkland’s ship-building industry began on the Lake Washington waterfront with the construction of ferries. For 20 years, most of the boats on Lake Washington were either built or repaired in the Kirkland area. The 1917 opening of the ship canal also opened Lake Washington to ocean-going vessels.

By 1940, Kirkland’s Lake Washington Shipyard was building warships for the U.S. Navy. More than 25 warships were built during World War II on what is now Carillon Point.” — kirklandwa.gov
