Carroll Street Cafe

Carroll Street in Cabbagetown is so small and obscure that if you blink, you’d miss its small shops and restaurants. And, right smack in the middle of this street is the Carroll Street Cafe, exactly the kind of place I was drawn to in university: artsy, bohemian, with works by local artists on display and occasional live bands.

I can almost imagine the place packed on a cold winter day with the windows fogged, a band playing, and people enjoying a hot beverage and meal.

The menu contains a wide array of sandwiches and pastas — nothing spectacular and nothing overpriced. It was the tapas menu that caught my eye (and where I found food that was wheat free); prior to discovering this I was tempted to walk out after a glass of lemonade.

Of particular note was the seared mahi-mahi tuna on white beans. I’m not sure this was even on the menu, but my server recommended it without hesitation.

And, the seared scallops on red cabbage slaw with avocado vinaigrette. I’m a sucker for anything scallop, so this was an easy choice.
