Plaza de España

Sevilla has seen two world fairs in its history: the Ibero-American Exposition World’s Fair (1929) and Expo ’92. The buildings in and surrounding Sevilla’s Maria Luisa Park come from Expo ’92, and the Plaza de España comes from the Ibero-American Exposition World’s Fair.

We discovered rather quickly that locals are proud of their expositions. Just about every cab ride, horse ride, and bus ride took us past the Expo Pavilions and included some sort of story, history or tidbit related to these pavilions.

In order to see the Plaza, you need to go into Maria Luisa Park. And, an easy way to navigate around the pathways is via one of the 4-wheeled bikes you can rent at the entrance… or go via horse drawn carriage.

The Plaza is exquisite. If you want to get an armchair tourist view of it’s splendor, there is a scene in Star Wars Episode II (attack of the clones) where Padmé and Anakin arrive on Naboo and are walking over beautifully tiled stairs into a building of arches and detailed brickwork. This is the Plaza de España.
