Domestic Medicine

This comes from the Nova Scotia Sanatorium in Kentville. The sanatorium was initially the place where people went when they had tuberculosis and later became a hospice for those returning soldiers who were injured during World War 1.

One section of the book pictured contains “Advice to Mothers, on the subject of their own health; and of the means of promoting the health, strength, and beauty of their offspring.”

  1. Sharlene, the San as was referred to by the locals was the home of my dad when he returned from the first world war. He was gassed three times and was experiencing internal bleeding in his lungs and was not expected to live. He met my mom there and they married and moved to the North Mountain north of Middleton where he gained strength. They bought a home in Victoria Vale and raised a family that consisted of seven sons and one daughter. He lived to over 97 years and the beginnings of his recovery began at the Kentville San.
