Waiting For Chimney Swifts

In Middleton, Nova Scotia, at the high school I attended many years ago there is a large chimney that Swifts use as refuge at night. We went to watch them last night and they didn’t appear. Either we were too early, too late or perhaps they are now out of their chimney season (Swifts usually use the chimney from May to mid-August).

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Chimney Swifts: they are small fast birds who congregate just after dark and spiral down a chimney like a big black tornado. It’s an amazing thing to watch.
